⚡ Ultra-fast grocery is moving deeper into the mainstream UK retail stack.
"Amazon Now" has launched in Manchester, its first UK city outside London.
Customers in selected central and east Manchester postcodes can order thousands of groceries and household essentials across 35 categories through Amazon’s app or website, seven days a week, for delivery in about 30 minutes or less.
The model is built around micro-fulfilment centres close to residential areas. East Manchester is live, with Salford and Stockport sites due to follow. Prime delivery starts at £1.99 and is free above £20; non-Prime delivery starts at £3.99. A £2 fee applies to orders below £15.
Why does this matter? Amazon is combining discovery, membership, checkout, local inventory and last-mile fulfilment inside one platform. 📦 For retailers, the competitive benchmark is not simply speed: it is whether assortment accuracy, demand forecasting, picking, routing and customer communications can work as one reliable system.
For retail tech providers, rapid delivery creates opportunity, but it also exposes weak inventory data quickly. The strategic question is whether retailers should build this capability, partner for it, or differentiate elsewhere.
