Grocery ecommerce is moving from search to intent. 🛒🤖

On 9 September, Instacart and Shipt launched competing AI shopping assistants.

Instacart’s Clementine, available across the US and Canada, can turn a conversation, list or recipe into a cart shaped by store inventory and shopper preferences. Its white-label Cart Assistant is also live with several grocers.

Shipt’s Ask Shipt, available through its app and website, can build carts from prompts or photos, work to a budget and let customers review, swap or edit recommendations before checkout.

The bigger signal isn’t another chatbot. It’s a new interface between a household’s intent and a retailer’s catalogue.

For grocers in Europe and beyond, the scorecard should be practical: item matching, dietary accuracy, substitution logic, pricing and promotion handling, consent, and whether the tool creates incremental value rather than simply reshuffling existing orders.

Neither company has published independently validated commercial or accuracy outcomes yet. That makes disciplined measurement as important as the launch itself. 📊
