Retailers are starting to build the secondhand market into their own digital estates. ♻️
IKEA UK is preparing to launch a peer-to-peer secondhand marketplace for IKEA Family members, following pilots in Spain and Norway.
Buyers and sellers will connect directly, with further launch details due in the coming months.
Why it matters: resale is shifting from a peripheral sustainability initiative into a product and platform challenge.
IKEA’s existing marketplace operation in Sweden shows the technology stack involved: pre-filled product data, price suggestions, verified member accounts, buyer protection, held payments and collection coordination.
For retailers, this creates a relationship beyond the first sale. But it also raises operational questions around listing accuracy, condition, authenticity, disputes, safety and local fulfilment.
The strongest resale platforms will not simply add a classifieds page. They will use product data and trust infrastructure to make a second transaction feel as deliberate as the first. 🪑📱
Could retailer-operated resale become a meaningful loyalty channel, or will shoppers continue to prefer open marketplaces?
